I really doubt that the archive will fall anytime soon. The movies are just a small part of the content here, and the challenge to the Google Books agreement is a very high priority right now. This agreement would give Google a virtual monopoly on electronic texts, including out of print and public domain titles that are very important here. IA has a very small staff, though, and this is stretching them to the limit.

public movie domain torrents is a good site to download pd movies and it is free. i use it quite a lot. classic cinema online is also good. i use the firefox download helper to download from classic cinema online and it is also free. do not bother with the forums on public movie domain torrents they are full of spam. legit torrents also have pd movies to download.

Thanks! I already use public domain movie torrents. Classic cinema online looks good, and I'll check into the download helper.
I'm not so sure about legit torrents. I get no hits if I put "public domain" in the "search torrents" field, but lots if I let that field open and just go after the "movies" category. But results include The Great Escape and the original House of Wax. Is there a way to search for PD flicks only? Or must I just sort through the whole mess?

Unfortunately some of the "alternate" sites listed in some of the above posts actually host their films on the IA and as a result if the IA goes down so will their links.
